So Christmas has been and gone.
I can't quite believe that tomorrow will be my last day of annual leave before returning to work on Monday. It hasn't felt like two weeks- but I have enjoyed my time off and I'm really glad I didn't cancel it.
It's been a nice Christmas and better than I anticipated.
I've spent today nursing the usual sleepiness of post-New Years Eve celebrations. Its usually at this point that I make some resolutions however I'm not going to bother: They are always the same and the only thing I need to change this year is to waste no time on twats and to not overthink things.
I have much to look forward to in 2015: I have a trip to Japan and possibly a trip to Australia later in the year with a view to looking into job prospects there.
Lots to see, projects to do and no one holding me back anymore. Here's hoping it's a good one.

Holly.
A small red cheery berry and a dark green spikey leaf that hurts.
It's Christmas.
Despite the normal grumbles about commuting in potential snow... December is usually my favourite time of the year. This year however it feels somewhat muted. I'm trying so hard to stay positive and enjoy it but I can't help feeling that I'm simply not as jolly this year. Perhaps it's just because of the events of the last six months, or just a general fatigue from being overworked ... I'm not sure... but I've struggled to maintain the usual excitement and this has affected my ability to plan and prepare for the holiday season too.
I've normally done all my shopping and got it wrapped under a strictly colour-co ordinated Christmas tree. I haven't. I only just finished my shopping this morning and have yet to have things delivered, wrapped and ready. My presents seem a bit hap-hazard and the ones I've made I'm not incredibly pleased with either; I've scrapped one handmade one, and have three more to complete. I've wrapped what I do have... a mishmash of Christmas wrapping paper and ribbons from previous years which are usually perfectly planned and co ordinated. I've just had to make do, unwilling to put the full effort and money into the usual standards I achieve. This is pretty much a summary of where I am in my life. Caught in between lots of things and not really completely together. But that's ok.
Despite all this... it's not all gloom. I've had some lovely festive outings already with some tasty cocktails and good company; a trip to the German market and sampling some Brum pubs; and have a few more before the end of the year. I've not spent a ridiculous amount of money and needing to save for Christmas has meant I've had some cosy weekends in sculpting instead of spending money on alcohol. I'm also back in touch with a friend I thought I lost this Christmas. You've got to be grateful for small things.
I'm sure the December reflections will be there, niggling, in the back of my mind for some time... but I'm trying to keep my focus on what is important. Whatever happens next year is next year, for now, sit back, enjoy the family, friends and Christmas cheeriness in people's eyes... and try to relax. If nothing else, two weeks off will be much needed to replenish and kick back.

Christmas 2013
I think the below video best sums up my Christmas and New Year.
It's been fantastic: Some much MUCH needed time off work spent with friend and family, including my little neice, bro and sister in law on Skype. I've caught up with family I don't see much and got to spend time with the people I care about most. It's been just brilliant.
New Years eve was spent at the new flat with a small selection of friends. Most importantly for me- Markuus and his partner Jo came over; and N also spent the evening with us so it was lovely to spend it with some of my favourite people. :-)
The only sad thing is that's it's all flown by so fast... I've barely had time to think up any resolutions and now this week I have suddenly found myself back at work in an almost zombie-like stupor trying to remember what my job is.
Resolutions coming up...

Christmas Eve Eve; 2013 Reflections
I'm sitting in my slippers, watching A Christmas Carol on TV. It's Christmas Eve Eve and I finished work today for the rest of the week.
It's normally this time of the year when I'm doing a review of the year and compiling some New Years Resolutions, but I'm feeling a distinct lack of energy to do either. Plus, I'm not sure summarising my year will be all that eventful this time!
However... now I think back...
Things I have lost:
Some friends. Not in a physical sense, they're alive and well. People change, people move on and some people you realise really aren't worth your time and energy. Those who mean a lot to me, remain, however. Even if I don't see them as much as I would like. Thank you for your continued friendship to Mrs P, Markuus, and my dear N who I will always love with all my heart.
Money- a lot has been thrown away on copious drinking, nights out and shoes... but all in all I have some memories of happy times such as motor racing with N and many a post-working-week-debriefing drinks down the local.
My twenties- A heart felt goodbye to my twenties; bittersweet as I lay to rest many fun and happy memories of my youth interspersed with the anxiety, insecurity, angst and heartache that goes along with it.
Things I have gained:
New friends.
New flat.
My independence back.
Strength and Tone from my gym workouts.
Perspective.
A whole new decade ahead of me as I entered my thirties.
New gig experiences- Deftones, Bastille and the amazing Nine Inch Nails... memories of the latter I will treasure forever. Two more ticks off on my "Bands to See Before I Die" list.
A review of my 2013 Resolutions:
Resolution 1: Be more active.
Achieved. I'm still going to the gym about twice a week and generally feeling better for it; although I certainly notice the difference when I don't go.
Resolution 2: Be less angry.
Semi- Achieved. I'm not sure this has happened... if it has it's more by the ever-so-slightly decreased invasion of the Government impacting on my job and colleagues. I think this year has been more stressful than angry so I'm saying this is semi-achieved.
Resolution 3: Laugh more.
Achieved. I have certainly laughed a lot this year. I have a graffiti'd piggy bank on my desk at work which says "Just Keep Larfin" thanks to my colleague Daz who decorated it for me and says I say the word Laugh posh. He's from the Black Country.
Resolution 4: Be Inspired.
Semi- Achieved. I've been to the cinema, seen films at home and been to gigs this year which have all been inspiring to me. However I need to get out more next year and see more places. I've spend too much time in the office this year... I need inspiration from nature and new cities next year (money permitting).
Resolution 5: Be more creative.
Semi-Achieved. I failed to get my new tattoo thanks to money issues, however I have one planned for my birthday in 2014. I've done more sculpture commissions this year and have two lined up for the beginning of next year. To be continued.
Resolution 6: Blog more.
Achieved. This has definitely been achieved.
Resolution 7: Feel settled.
Not achieved. Work in progress. I think I know what I need to be happy- companionship. At the moment I'm at a loss as to where to find this.

Belong.
I've just caught up on a few weeks of blog-reading and thought it was probably time to update my own.
The truth being told- much has changed but I've avoided posting anything for some time for a few reasons: 1- I have been incredibly busy. 2- I had no internet access for a few weeks. 3- some issues I've had I felt best not to air in the public realm (aka- if you can't say anything nice, say nothing at all).
I've moved into a flat with my friend and colleague H. It's not quite home yet, pictures still need to be hung. If I'm honest it all feels very temporary. But I think everything does now. Everything.
It's Christmas and I've been very disorganised this year. Moving in at the start of November proved very expensive so I think Christmas has been somewhat tainted by a general worry about money this year. The last few weeks have been busy. Both at work and socially.... genuinely too much to list but it's been a blur of funerals, tears, too much drink, too much work, stress and laughs. I'm writing this hours before my fourth and final Christmas work do this year. I'm not sure my feet or my liver can cope with many more!
I'm still going to the gym albeit the last few weeks have been hard to find time to fit anything worth while in. Slacking.
I generally feel very tired.. I'm always tired these days. I don't work long hours like others but I give 110% to a job where I get paid averagely for the effort I put in. My priority next year is to get a new job and possibly outside of the Force so I don't have to be quite so worried about being made redundant every few months. In addition to work stress, I don't sleep well. I have two Zopiclone on ration for when I really REALLY need to sleep but generally I think I've gotten used to feeling semi tired on a daily basis.
I'm struggling with Christmas this year. It seems to have lost its meaning, like many things have to be honest. Recent events have put certain things in perspective and I am lucky to have my health, my family and a sprinkling of friends who genuinely care, however all this is clouded by a general feeling of not belonging anywhere.
This is the trouble with Christmas. It's great if you're happy; If you aren't it's like a giant microscope magnifying everything you're missing in full focus...
So you just smile and grab another drink.

Christmas 2012 with my little neice.
I was apprehensive about christmas this year until my brother told us he was bringing his new little family back from Japan to join us for two weeks over Christmas and New Year. They arrived on the 22nd December and I met my little neice Natalie for the first time.
The last two weeks have gone really quick but have provided us all with a lovely end to a tumultuous year. Spending time with my little neice has been a joy and it makes me feel pretty sad that when they leave on Friday morning I'll be saying goodbye to her for an indefinite amount of time.
I'm not sure what age she will be when we'll see her again, and it's highly likely that she will forget us until she's much older and her longer term memory is more functional. I feel sad about this... but immensely happy to have met her at such a precious little age. It's made for a really warming, family christmas which is just what I've needed at the end of such a difficult year. My heart feels full again.
Gonna miss this little munchkin.

Reflections on 2012 part 1.
The year is drawing to a close.
I started off 2012 having left my best friend and partner of 8 years*, my home, alot of my belongings and the place where my heart and soul had resided for a year, impressing its gentle watermarks into the walls, surfaces and ambiance of each room. My mum was recovering from her breast cancer surgery, and my job was once again potentially under threat at a place where I'd found many friends and felt like one of the family.
Everything felt upside down. I was exhausted and mostly in tatters and about this time last year I had already decided that something had to change.
By January, I was back at my parents home, sleeping in a cold, back room of the house on a sofa bed. I started looking around for other jobs around this time too. By March, I was getting interviews for new jobs and after a few successful ones and two job offers I opted for a new job in Walsall, a promotion, and all round challenge. It was to be my second huge step into the unknown so early on into the year and despite the fears and conflictions I seized the opportunity as a new start.
During these months of interviews and CV's an job spiel, two things happened- I learnt how to juggle (!) and I met L* who was working down the coridoor in a temporary office. L has become my biggest smile of 2012. In him, I have found a true best friend for life and I owe him an awful lot for his stoic support, kind words and encouragement over the year. I love him dearly and hope I never ever lose his friendship.
In contrast, during this time I met a second person who would be my biggest mistake of the year. I also thought, this person- who I won't even grace with an initial, would be a true friend. I shared a great deal with them and, perhaps mislead by the sadness and instability in my life at the time, I leant on them for support. Instead, my trust was betrayed and I got caught up in bitter mind games resulting in nothing but let down, hurt and confusion.
I started my new job at the end of April.* The timing couldn't have been better as I needed to get away from the pressure cooker of friend-politics that had been building. After three years communting by train, I had to step away from time tables, platforms, reading newspapers and books in a carriage and healthy, brisk walks- and swap it for a 25 minute commute of sitting still staring at a road surface. I felt lost, stepping away from the comforts of my good friends, my work family who I had loved seeing daily- into a cold, old building in a very different area of the West Midlands. At a time where I craved stability and order, I found the transition hard but was relieved to find that my new working team was friendly and welcoming.
Resolution 1: Be more active.
Despite my friendly team, the job itself has brought about a new perspective of policing, people, culture and criminality. Instead of working on the peripheries of policing in a supportive role, I've learnt an awful lot from being thrust into the thick of actual police work. It's opened my eyes and altered some of my opions, and this in turn has added to my angst and fury at this odeous, bile-inducing- Government's policies. It's left me very resentful, as I'm sure regular blog readers will already know with many of my posts this year taking on a political rant tone in utter disgust at some of the unjustified impositions this Tory government has created.
Resolution 2: Be less angry.
May saw the birth of my little neice- Natalie*; another small blossom of newness, hope and smiles in an otherwise tumultuous and rocky time.
In late July, early August, our family cat Oscar had to be put down*. He was a friendly, clumsy, 14 year old black and white cat who had seemed well up until the week before his death. He had a deteriorating heart condition due to his age. I'm glad that I was with him when he was put to sleep. I held him, stroked his head as his eyes closed, and kissed him goodbye with a thank you for his life in our family home. He's left a small hole. Our remaining cat, Phoebe misses him, and she has been changed by his absence. She seems lost sometimes, and anxious of being alone- something I can very much relate to this year. I miss him too.
Living back at the family home after almost ten years of independence hasn't come easy. It's had an impact on my family relationships, some of which I will discuss later*.
My creativity hasn't gone by the wayside this year either. It's been a busy, chaotic year but I've managed to find time to complete some sculpture projects amidst it all. I think one of my resolutions next year will be to make more time for creative projects. That means more photo's. More clay. And learning a new skill.
Resolution 3: Be more creative.
My main trip of the year was my visit to Brugge with N. It was a beautiful place and it was great taking photographs, breathing clean air into my lungs, and just experiencing being somewhere so quaintly, stunning. Whilst I don't think the two of us felt completely relaxed, images and sights will remain alive in my memory with fondness and warmth. Highlights included a fantastic Dali exhibition, and seeing works by Miro and Picasso in smaller exhibitions there. I also really want to go back to Brussels next year for a weekend and spend time visiting the many art galleries and museums as we only dropped by for a couple of hours on our way home.
Fast track a couple of months and I feel more settled in my job. My team friendships grow almost daily, and I feel that each passing week brings me closer into the fold. I am aware that my job will only be for another 12 months, but I'll try and make the most of being where I am for the time being; gathering as much training and knowledge as I can ready for my next step and challenge. As the year closes, I'm starting to miss my home again. Whilst I have much to be grateful for, I still have things to aim for, things I need in my life in order to feel whole again. I've entertained the thought that perhaps that bit of emptiness is okay, that it may always remain and that all I actually need to do is learn to appreciate and step back; to make more time for the things I enjoy, to laugh more and spend time with people I care about and who care about me. This year has taught me all those things are vital and while I'm entering the christmas period feeling wary of sadness- at a time where everyone turns to family and I'm still not sure where I belong- I'm also hopeful that what I've learnt this year will help me make better decisions and be a better person.
Truth be told, I was dreading this christmas away from home, away from a loving partner, and looking back on the difficulties of the year. But, my brother, his wife and my little neice will be joining the family Christmas this year for the first time and I hope that it will be special for that alone.
I'm going to be diving into some of the topics I've discussed here in more detail in the run up to Christmas.*

But, my brother, his wife and my little neice will be joining the family Christmas this year for the first time and I hope that it will be special for that alone.
I'm going to be diving into some of the topics I've discussed here in more detail in the run up to Christmas.*

Busy Bee!
It's a busy time of year. I am, however, smugly able to say that I have completed all my christmas shopping and about two thirds of it is wrapped and ready to roll!
It'll be a wierd christmas for me this year; no tree or home of my own to decorate for christmas. I am once again in charge of decorating the Christmas table at my families home which I have started to gather bits for. The christmas period itself will be nice, with my brother, sister-in-law and my little neice coming back to the UK for the first time in years. It'll be the first time I've met my neice and the first time the whole family will be under one roof.
I will be keeping myself pre-occupied and busy in the run up to christmas to avoid feeling glum about not being in my own home anymore and being out of a relationship. I have a couple of christmas do's and birthday parties to attend, so my weekends are fully booked. It should help to keep my mind off things, though my bank balance is bound to take a bit of a hammering!

Grey.
URGH.
It's over. An absolutely crap week at work has left me feeling anxious and migraine-y and looking like I haven't eaten for three weeks. Lots went wrong, I made a mistake, I stumbled across about 30 mistakes colleague has made which I've had to attampt to rectify, figures, paper, staffing levels, strikes, my cough isn't getting better either. ... you name it- if it was stress inducing-it happened this week. I am so tired.
I feel like seven shades of grey.
But... it's the weekend... and having done 99% of my christmas shopping I want to spend this weekend quietly sculpting and listening to music. I need to. I need to relax and unwind and make myself feel like a person again because this week has sapped pretty much all my strength.
First christmas in the new place coming up so I'm feeling quite keen to get the decs up soon this weekend if I get the chance.

Gigs and bits.
Another brilliant gig last Monday- Rise Against.
After having to join a MONSTER queue, we were plucked out by an O2 Angel who after a swift look at our phones, took us to the priority customer queue and we walked straight in! So there IS an advantage to being an o2 customer after 10 years!
The crowd wasn't quite as friendly as the Incubus crowd, but I expected from two very different bands. I did feel a bit old, and quickly realised that I was going to be much more comfortable watching this particular gig from a distance but all in all they lived up to my expectations. They even played Audience of One which is one of my favorites.
Tom Morrello was supporting and proved to be a fantastic warm up act. Great frontman- though I wasn't sure about all his music. Listenable but not as angsty as I thought it might be- particularly for the political-slant he seemed to take. I loved that he came on stage in his Guy-Fawkes-Occupy mask and tried to get the kids to consider politics, socialism and the Occupy movement. Awesome work Mr Morrello. Two thumbs up.
Suprisingly I think I enjoyed Incubus slightly more- and not just because of the incredibly, hot, sultry, half-naked man on the stage, but because I could connect more with the music, knew more words to sing along and wasn't distracted by having to protect my feet and arms from bruising and tissue damage.
I'm already on the look at for other gigs in December but haven't seen any that take my fancy yet. The Download 2012 headliners are being announced slowly but surely over the next few weeks- Metallica headlining, which I guessed months ago. I'm not suprised if it's going to have a very retro vibe with it being the 10th anniversary so I may be giving it a miss next year. There'd have to be some pretty amazing names up there like NIN or A Perfect Circle to get me to go. We'll see... but I'm not exactly going to be rushing out to get tickets yet.
I'm 80% done with Christmas shopping which isn't bad for mid November. Still a number of things to get, and relatively on budget so all going well there.
Quiet(ish) weekend ahead... a cosy night in with some good TV including Derren Brown.
